DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

Here are some bits and pieces of my design development work. I started with really form fitting silhouettes and shapes. Then I started to loosen it up and added more detailing to the garments.

As my concept was about grunge I wanted to make the clothes look distressed and worn out. I was hoping to have some more time to do more design development to really get the collection refined.

Here is the final line up of the collection DISTORTED for BOSS Orange. The collection is for the AUTUMN/WINTER season 2016.The collection reflects the concept as the materials, silhouettes, colors and detailing.

ESCAPISM

We are young and we don’t know our place in this world. We escape from it through music, movies and books.

“You’re little bit lost and you’re a little bit badass. You’re gonna have to make your own fun, your own world, using your very own magic. But you are never alone. “ Thurston Moore, Book “Grunge”

CONSEPT COMING TOGETHER

Last few days I have been working hard with the concept and layout for my work. It’s a combination of handmade collages and putting it to a digital format.  I think combining handmade stuff to digital work makes the layout more interesting. It has been an interesting process and something new for me. Normally I’m used to doing really simple layouts and only working digitally.  So for this course I really wanted to push my skills to a new way. This is definitely something I will bring back with me to Finland.

GRUNGE photographs by Michael Lavine

GRUNGE (2009) is a photography book by Michael Lavine. It’s an interesting little piece of history about Seattle teenage punks and the rise of grunge bands.

Lavine was a high school graduate in the early 1980’s. He was interested to photography and was introduced to punk rock scene trough out his roommates. Michael started to shoot Seattle street punks. He happened to be in the right place at the right time and started to shoot underground bands. At late 80's he shoot band like Nirvana, Sonic Youth and Mudhoney.

The opening words by Thurson Moore is an interesting look back to the starting points of Lavins photographic career as well as look back to the history of grunge. These little notes from the opening words as well as the photography really showed the life and mode of Seattle at (home of Grunge) the late 80's and early 90's.

"You're a little bit lost and you're a little bit badass. You're gonna have to make your own fun, your own world, using your very own magic. But you are not alone."

"The kids were so uncool, they were beyond cool. They embared and reclaimed their high school deningration:Loser." Inspired me to create the consept Gereneration uncool.

"Kurt wore thrift-store hand-me-dons, worn-out parkas, beat-up sneakers, flannel shirts and jeans."

"What really matterd was to be able to stare back at the audience, the camera and his world, like a mirror challenging you to break it."
Michael Lavine end his book to the words that I think reflect the meaning of this book really well: "When the mainstream media attached the label "grunge'to our univese a collective cringe of horror howled out from everyone who was branded. But looking back now it's kind of amazing how I started out as just a kid with a camera in the middle of nowhere and ended up with the honour of witness and document such an important and powerful piece of rock history."

KURT COBAIN: THE MONTAGE OF HECK

21 years has passed from the death of Kurt Cobain the frontman of the 90’s iconic band Nirvana. The new movie Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck (2015) takes a new deep look to the life of Cobain as a son, a brother, a friend, a band mate, a husband and a father and from a happy childhood to the point depression and heroin addiction that made him want to take his own life. The movie is humanized portrayal of Cobain and his life containing Cobain’s artwork, notes, and audio recordings. You can start to have a better understanding for the person not as media saw him, but how he saw himself.

Cobain had a happy childhood at Aberdeen, Washington. He was sensitive kid who loved to draw and create things. Cobain’s parent’s divorced when he was 7. He felt embarrassed and started to rebel against his parent. Cobain started pilfer and broke store windows. He was thrown from home to home and he didn’t feel like he belonged to anywhere. “Only thing he would have wanted was a real family, but he rebelled against the only thing that he wanted”, said Cobain’s sister Kim Cobain.

He was a lone, self-hating teenager who found a release from his angst in smoking pot and then he discovered punk music. He started to teach himself guitar and write music. Music was an outlet for his feelings that he couldn’t express otherwise.

In the movie viewers are allowed to see into the Cobain’s personal notebooks. Fast flashing images of the journal pages with thoughts of who he is as a person, paintings and drawings. These notes really show the feelings and thoughts of Cobain. This is a closest you can ever get to Cobain. New never heard audio recordings tell a story of a young immature guy who became an icon.

Cobain was labelled as a voice of the generation by media. He wanted his band to be successful but he didn’t want to be a voice of the generation. He felt pressure about the position he was but into. He felt that everything had got too big with the band and it was his reason and there was no coming back. Cobain spooked to his audience trough his music. He captured the feelings of what is like to be teenager going towards to adulthood.

In the movie you can hear Cobain telling about his first times smoking pot at the age of 13. He tried to get rid of his feelings and demons with using drugs. He was a heavy drinker and after the band got more successful he started to use harder drugs. After getting married with Courtney Love and having their one and only child Frances they still continued their use of drugs. It’s really emotional to see Cobain playing with Frances and see that he really loved and cared about her. Still he had his demons and drugs. This usage turned into an addiction witch later turn into point of he taking his own life.

Cobain died at 5th of April 1994. He was 27 years old and joined the club of celebrities who died at that age. Cobain will be 27 forever. People are really fascinated with a thought of death celebrities. He left behind his music and his art that will be there for long after his gone.
